What Is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger occurs when the tendon that controls finger bending becomes inflamed and cannot glide smoothly through its sheath (a tunnel of tissue that surrounds the tendon). This inflammation causes the tendon to catch or lock at the entrance of the sheath, creating the characteristic clicking, locking, or snapping sensation.

It can affect any finger, including the thumb. It can affect one finger or multiple fingers. It is more common in people aged 40–60, women, and people with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.

Trigger Finger (Stenosing Tenosynovitis)

Symptoms of Trigger Finger

Trigger finger symptoms usually start gradually and worsen over time:

Morning stiffness

Your finger feels stiff, especially when you wake up

Clicking or snapping

A catching sensation when you bend or straighten the finger

Locking

Finger gets stuck in a bent position and needs to be straightened with the other hand

Pain at the base of the finger

Tenderness in the palm near the affected finger’s base

A bump or nodule

A small lump may be felt at the base of the finger in the palm

Swelling

In the palm or around the finger

Causes of Trigger Finger

Several factors can contribute to the development of CTS, including:

  • Repetitive gripping — farmers, factory workers, musicians, people using tools daily
  • Diabetes — people with diabetes are significantly more likely to develop trigger finger
  • Rheumatoid arthritis — inflammation from RA can affect the tendon sheath
  • Hypothyroidism — low thyroid function can cause tendon thickening
  • Gout and amyloidosis — metabolic conditions that affect tendons
  • Women aged 40–60 — more commonly affected than men

Trigger Finger Release Surgery (When Injections Don't Work)

When non-surgical treatments fail or when the finger is severely locked, trigger finger release surgery is a highly effective solution. It is one of the simplest and most successful hand procedures performed at Krisha Hand Hospital.

  • Duration: 15–20 minutes under local anaesthesia
  • Day procedure: You go home the same day (no hospital admission)
  • Technique: A small incision at the base of the finger — the tight tendon sheath is released, allowing the tendon to glide freely again
  • Pain: Minimal — most patients describe it as very manageable
  • Success rate: Over 95% — one of the highest of any hand surgery
  • Return to light activities: Within 1–2 weeks
  • Full recovery: 4–6 weeks

FAQs About Trigger Finger

Mild cases of trigger finger can sometimes improve with rest and activity modification. However, most moderate-to-severe cases progressively worsen without treatment. Waiting too long can lead to permanent stiffness or joint contracture. Early treatment gives the best results — especially with a corticosteroid injection, which is very effective in the early stages.

Generally, 1–2 corticosteroid injections are recommended. A single injection resolves trigger finger in approximately 60–70% of patients. If symptoms return after two injections, surgery is usually recommended as the most effective long-term solution. Multiple injections are not advised as they can weaken the tendon over time.

Trigger finger release surgery is one of the safest and most straightforward hand procedures. It is performed under local anaesthesia (the hand is numbed, you remain awake), takes 15–20 minutes, and has a success rate over 95%. Risks such as infection, nerve injury, or recurrence are rare when performed by an experienced hand surgeon. At Krisha Hand Hospital, we take all necessary precautions to ensure the safest possible outcome.

Most patients can use their hand for light activities within 1–2 weeks. The small incision heals within 2–3 weeks. Full strength and unrestricted use typically returns within 4–6 weeks. Some patients who do physical work (farmers, mechanics) may need 6–8 weeks before returning to heavy labour. Physiotherapy is generally not required for routine trigger finger release.

Recurrence after trigger finger release surgery is rare — less than 5% of cases. This is much lower than the recurrence rate after steroid injections alone. The surgery directly releases the tight tendon sheath, providing a permanent cure in the vast majority of patients.

Yes, and it is especially important that you do — people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing trigger finger and the condition tends to be more severe. At Krisha Hand Hospital, we have experience treating trigger finger in diabetic patients. Steroid injections are used with caution as they can temporarily raise blood sugar. Surgery may be a better first option for diabetic patients in some cases. Dr. Karn will discuss the best approach for your specific situation.
